A resource room is a smaller sized classroom where students who have been diagnosed with a disability come to learn. The student must qualify for special education services to receive services in a resource room. In order for a student to qualify he/she must be identified by his/her teacher as a student who is struggling to learn the curriculum taught in the general education class. Also your child's teacher will have sought out resources such as Title, or RTI before bringing him/her to the special education team. The teacher will then discuss the student with the special education team who will then decide if the student meets the criteria to warrant further testing by the school psychologist. If the team agrees that the child needs to be tested, contact will be made with the parent who must agree to the testing. The psychologist will then test the student and if he/she meets criteria then the appropriate special service will be identified, through an IEP meeting with the parents. An IEP is an Individualized Education Plan that addresses the student's weaknesses and their specific needs. An IEP includes areas in which the student struggles, goal and objectives, and accommodations. An IEP is good for a year but the plan maybe revisited anytime before that year is up. Every three years, if the teachers or parents feel it is necessary, the student will again see the psychologist for updated testing.
